It is not uncommon for an employer to condition an offer of employment on the successful completion on certain additional requirements prior to the start date. These requirements could include a background check, verification of education history, medical exam and/or drug test.
Before conducting any background checks, review federal, state and local law requirements and/or limitations regarding an employer's use of credit and criminal history in hiring decisions. Also, check state or local law to determine whether drug screening is allowed.
If an offer is contingent upon certain agreements, such as a restrictive covenant, confirm whether those agreements are permitted under state or local law and if so, whether there are any particular requirements or procedures that must be followed.
