Summary
- Almost all Michigan employers are subject to Michigan's overtime requirements under the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act (IWOWA). See Employer Coverage.
- Like the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Michigan law requires covered employers to pay nonexempt employees one and one-half times their regular rate of pay for all overtime hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. See Overtime.
- Police officers, firefighters and employees of state-run hospitals may be paid overtime according to work periods longer than the typical seven-day workweek. See Alternative Work Periods.
- If certain requirements are met, Michigan law allows employers and employees to agree that overtime will be compensated as compensatory time off rather than monetary wages. See Compensatory Time.
