Summary
- Wisconsin employers are required to pay overtime to all nonexempt employees at a rate of one and one-half the employee's regular rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week. See Computing Overtime.
- Wisconsin's overtime regulation is expansive, but excludes nonprofit enterprises. See Employer Coverage.
- Public employees may be compensated for overtime with time off instead of monetary payment. See Compensatory Time.
- Most nonexempt employees are entitled to overtime pay when they have worked more than 40 hours in a workweek. There are, however, exceptions to this general rule that apply to government police officers, firefighters and EMS workers, and to some medical care providers. See Alternative Work Periods.
