Summary
- Employers and employees have various duties regarding health and safety. (See Duties on employers and employees)
- Employers are obliged to comply with the occupational health and safety regulations of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD), which vary according to whether the employer operates a high-, medium- or low-risk environment. (See Duties on employers and employees)
- The MHRSD is responsible, through its labour inspectors, for monitoring and enforcing the application of employment legislation, including health and safety provisions. (See Enforcement and penalties)
- Compensation for occupational injury or illness is provided by a statutory "occupational hazards" insurance scheme, administered by the General Organisation for Social Insurance, and employers must register their employees under this scheme and contribute the equivalent of 2% of the employees' pay for the insurance.
