Summary

  • There are various types of leave that may be available to an employee in Louisiana. See Leaves of Absence.
  • Louisiana does not have a state family and medical leave law applicable to private employers. See Family and Medical Leave.
  • Louisiana employers with 26 or more employees must provide six weeks to four months of leave for pregnancy, childbirth and related medical conditions. See Pregnancy Leave.
  • An employer may grant an employee up to 16 hours of leave from work in a 12-month period to attend, observe or participate in conferences or classroom activities related to the employee's dependent children that are conducted at the school or daycare center, if the conference or classroom activities cannot reasonably be scheduled during nonwork hours.   • A covered employer must provide an eligible employee with a paid leave to donate bone marrow. See Bone Marrow Donor Leave.
  • A covered employer must provide job-protected leave to eligible employees for genetic testing and cancer screening. See Leave for Genetic Testing and Cancer Screening.
  • Louisiana law provides job-protected leave to military servicemembers. See Military Leave.
  • A covered employer may not discriminate, terminate or otherwise discipline eligible veterans for taking time away from work to attend medical appointments which are necessary to receive veteran's benefits.See Veterans Medical Appointment Leave.
  • An employee who takes leave to perform duties of a first responder must be treated as being on a temporary leave subject to the terms and conditions of the employer's policy regarding leaves of absence, provided that the employee properly applies for reinstatement.   • Louisiana does not have a law that requires an employer to provide voting leave to employees. See Voting Leave.
