Employment Offer: Vermont

Employment Offer requirements for other states

Federal law and guidance on this subject should be reviewed together with this section.

Author: Wanda I. Otero, Langrock Sperry & Wool, LLP

Summary

  • When making employment offers, employers should be careful not to use language that could inadvertently alter the at-will status. See Confirmation of At-Will Status.
  • If prospective employees voluntarily disclose their current or past compensation, an employer can confirm that information after an employment offer is extended. See Salary History Inquiry Ban.
  • Employment offers should set forth any conditions of employment, such as a successful background check, drug testing, a preemployment physical and/or the execution of restrictive covenant agreements. See Conditions to Employment.
  • Employers in Vermont should withdraw an offer in writing in order to avoid a claim that a candidate reasonably relied on an offer to his or her detriment. See Withdrawing an Employment Offer.
