Summary

  • North Carolina's Equal Employment Practices Act establishes as a matter of public policy that private employers with 15 or more employees are prohibited from discriminating against employees on account of race, religion, color, national origin, age, sex or handicap. The statute also prohibits harassment based of these protected traits. The statute may form the basis for a claim of harassment based on a violation of the public policy of the State.   • North Carolina's Persons With Disabilities Protection Act prohibits harassment against any person covered by the Act. See Persons With Disabilities Protection Act.
  • Public employees are likewise protected from harassment in connection with the equal opportunity in employment statute. See Harassment Protection for Public Employees.
