Author: Scott E. Schaffer, Schaffer Law, LLC

Summary

  • Connecticut employers must pay covered employees one and one-half their regular rate of pay for all hours worked in excess of forty 40 in any workweek. The regular rate used to calculate overtime must include all remuneration for employment, except amounts specifically excluded by state statute. See The Regular Rate.
  • There are variations on the standard overtime formula for employees paid by piece rates, employees who perform two or more kinds of work, commissioned retail employees, delivery drivers and sales merchandisers. See Computing Overtime.
  • The fluctuating workweek method of calculating overtime may be used as long as several requirements have been satisfied. See The Fluctuating Workweek.
  • Connecticut hospitals may establish a work period of 14 consecutive days instead of the usual work period of seven consecutive days. See Alternative Work Periods.
  • Municipal employees may be provided compensatory time off instead of overtime pay, under certain conditions. See Compensatory Time.
  • Restaurants must pay employees at least one and one-half times the minimum wage for all time worked on their seventh consecutive day of work. See Restaurants.
