When to Use
Background screening can be a prudent measure to protect business interests and ensure the safety and security of the work environment. Background screening can range from simple reference checks and verifications of prior employment to more in-depth investigations of criminal background, credit history and other categories of information. However, an employer that conducts background checks must be aware of and follow applicable federal, state and local laws that limit the types of screening an employer may legally conduct and/or require employers to follow certain procedures for background checks.
An employer that conducts background screening should consider implementing this policy to detail the types of background checks it may conduct, the situations in which it may conduct background checks and its procedures for conducting background checks in accordance with applicable law.
