Violence in the workplace can consist of anything from a small altercation between two disputing employees, to a workplace shooting, to a devastating terrorist act.
Employers should implement policies and procedures to advise employees of what is considered prohibited violent behavior and what they should do in the event of an actual or potential workplace violence incident. The policy should foster a respectful and safe environment that makes employees feel comfortable reporting any suspicious or threatening behavior without fear of retaliation or retribution.
Employers should advise employees that it will promptly investigate all reports of suspicious or threatening behavior and/or threats of violence and that all violations will result in discipline or termination.
