Global Employee Well-being 2023 Research: Data Placemat of Key Findings and Self-Assessment Diagnostic

Author: Laci Loew

The benefits of holistic employee well-being (emotional/mental health, physical health, financial wellness, and life satisfaction) have impressive and measurable implications for employers and employees. Executed as a strategic business imperative, and not merely a set of HR programmatic solutions/benefits/perks, businesses see increases in productivity, engagement, and retention while employees experience less stress and burnout with more energy to tackle critical work.

According to our seminal Global Employee Well-being Research Study released in May 2023 with 450 total respondents (split nearly equally across UK- and US-based organizations), about half of those surveyed treat employee well-being as an important priority due to its impact on business outcomes, and an additional 24% consider it integral to their organization's mission. See Chart 1.

Also, organizations with leaders who own and advocate for holistic employee well-being as well as those that have an approach designed to expand well-being support to employees’ families and communities, are more likely to report improvement in key performance indicators (KPIs) over the prior year.

In addition to the business impact of holistic well-being, survey responses and comments uncovered key findings regarding:

  • Top areas of well-being focus;
  • Executive and senior leadership’s role in well-being;
  • Aspects of well-being strategy execution and implementation; and
  • Leading practices of holistic well-being.

  • The data placemat that graphically summarizes these key findings, and
  • The self-assessment diagnostic.

Both of these tools, developed and authored by Laci Loew, Senior Analyst HR Strategy and Insights, are intended for use by a CHRO, Chief People Officer, or other executive leader of HR. The data placemat provides the evidence to inform five leading practice areas of holistic well-being The self-assessment (with full descriptions for each leading practice executed at each of five levels of maturation) allows a senior HR leader to evaluate organizational maturity for each leading practice and begin action planning to advance effectiveness of holistic employee well-being practices for better business impact.
