Violations of employer work rules inevitably will occur from time to time. Often those violations will merit some sort of disciplinary action against the offending employee. Failure to enforce employer work rules can be damaging to employee morale, but disciplined employees may file grievances, make complaints to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or bring claims in certain circumstances. Therefore it is important for the disciplinary process to be consistent among similarly situated employees, and that it be fair. Adhering to standardized procedures and thoroughly documenting every step of the disciplinary process helps to ensure that the employee receives fair treatment. It will also help the employer mount a defense if the disciplined employee later brings a complaint or lawsuit.
