How to Design a Disciplinary Procedure
Author: Jill Gormley, Strong and Clear Communications
Work rules are necessary to ensure that a business operates effectively. It is imperative that employees understand their obligations and responsibilities toward their co-workers and their employer, and the consequences for failing to meet those obligations and responsibilities. When work rules are not clear, or are enforced haphazardly, employee morale suffers.
Furthermore, inconsistent enforcement or consequences for similar offenses can lead to discrimination claims. Employers should give thoughtful consideration to the rules that are necessary in their workplaces and construct a set of procedures to enforce those rules fairly. Doing so offers protection against successful employee claims and makes for a more productive working environment.
